BRICS Summit Key Details

  • BRICS Pay: A new payment system named BRICS Pay was introduced to facilitate transactions and exchange financial information between central banks of member countries, providing an alternative to SWIFT.

BRICS Kazan Declaration:

  • The declaration was adopted, with BRICS nations advocating for UN and Security Council reforms.
  • The declaration endorses State of Palestine’s full participation in the United Nations, based on the two-state solution.

BRICS Plus/Outreach Session:

  • On October 24, Russia hosted a plenary session in the BRICS Plus/Outreach format, engaging leaders from the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and delegations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and heads of several international organizations.

Expansion of BRICS Partners:

  • 13 new partner countries were added to BRICS: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

India-China Relations:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed a recent agreement with China on “complete disengagement and resolution” of the 2020 border issues, marking the first bilateral meeting between the leaders since 2020.

Key Bilateral Meetings:

  • China-Russia: Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin reaffirmed their strategic partnership, focusing on advancing the Belt and Road Initiative and Eurasian Economic Union integration.
  • India-China: PM Modi and President Xi resolved a four-year military standoff, seeking to strengthen ties between the two nations.
  • India-Iran: PM Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed the Chabahar Port, Afghanistan reconstruction, economic trade linkages to Central Asia, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  • Russia-South Africa: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Putin held a meeting where Ramaphosa expressed appreciation for Russia’s support during apartheid, affirming South Africa’s alliance with Russia.
  • Recently, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) announced the third edition of the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) Summit to strengthen partnerships in defense innovation. It is set to take place at Stanford University, California.
  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted the ‘Financing Summit 3.0’ to discuss the future of India’s financial sector in the context of the nation’s vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
  • The third edition of the INDUS-X Summit was co-organised by USISPF and Stanford University.
  • The second edition of the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024 has been inaugurated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • The summit unveiled a new website for the Food Import Clearance System 2.0 (FICS 2.0), aimed at faster processing and transparency.
